Mahalo to our wonderful industry professionals for volunteering their time to celebrate GIS Day. Students had fun exploring GIS-related activities while learning more about the great career opportunities involving geospatial technologies. Thank you to Patty Miller and Gretchen Chiques for helping to provide this special opportunity for Hawai’i students. We are so lucky to work with dedicated professionals and teachers committed to STEM education and making a difference in our community. What a great day!

Check out the action here!

Aloha Hawai’i Educators,

MEDB Women in Technology hopes that you are able to utilize Esri’s ArcGIS resources for your school (made available free to all K-12 private, public and charter schools through a partnership with Esri, the Hawaii DOE, and MEDB Women In Technology.

Esri’s Education Manager, Charlie Fitzpatrick, offers some great advice to help you share your students’ work while minimizing personally identifiable information:

Got interesting student-made maps? Share them! You can, via ArcGIS Online Organizations, while controlling exposure of personally identifiable info (“PII“). Success depends on students minimizing PII in the content, Org admins creating a login for sharing, and having a location to share.

See the entire article here:https://blogs.esri.com/esri/gisedcom/2016/01/25/fun-with-gis-190-sharing-work/.

MEDB Women In Technology rented Nat Geo’s Giant Traveling Map of the Pacific Ocean to showcase during GIS Day celebrations throughout the state, as well as to loan to schools for hands-on geospatial exploration fun for students.  The 35 feet by 26 feet giant map heads will be showcased tonight, December 14th, at UHMC’s GIS nightCertificate Program: A Night at the Aquarium at the Maui Ocean Center from 5p.m. to 6p.m.

The Giant Traveling Map visits Maui schools this week! Mahalo to Pomaika’i Elementary School teachers for allowing students the opportunity to explore the map’s features and mahalo to Jaydon Isobe for capturing his 4th grade students in action: http://vimeo.com/148188452
